(12 May 2010) Last week senior Australia Post representatives, including Managing Director, Ahmed Fahour met with the CEPU and CPSU to talk about the future directions for Australia Post and the issues that members are concerned about and want wrapped up in a new Fair Work Agreement.
During the Summit the Managing Director of Australia Post outlined the opportunities and challenges faced by the business and what Post is doing to address these challenges. Importantly, Mr. Fahour made a firm commitment to work with the CEPU and the CPSU to find the best solutions for employees and the business.
The CEPU emphasised safety (including tackling the operation of the Facility Nominated Doctor system), the need for full-time, secure and meaningful work and making sure work is fairly rewarded, including protection of take-home pay. As well the union provided its views about how to best protect and grow Australia Post’s business in a way that secured jobs at Post.
The Summit allowed for open and honest discussions between the parties. We have agreed to a concentrated program of discussions over the next few weeks to achieve a new Fair Work Agreement. In fact discussions were undertaken for three days in last week and will continue into this week. Members will be kept informed of the discussions.
It was agreed to issue a joint union /management statement at the conclusion of the summit. The statement has been issued to workplaces.
